OUYEN - Where it all began
The first Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph was held in Ouyen in 1998. Ouyen is located 1 hour south of Mildura on the Calder Highway. The event was born out of complimentary remark of then Premier of Victoria, Jeff Kennett, when he tasted a vanilla slice at the Ouyen Bakery. After holding 14 very successful events, the Ouyen community decided, in 2011, it was time to hand over the event to another local community, preferably in the Mildura Rural City Council Municipality. The last Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph at Ouyen was held on Friday, 2 September, 2011. Over 3,000 people gathered in the town to celebrate the Grand Finale of the event which had linked the town of Ouyen to the vanilla slice for 14 years.
MERBEIN - A new chapter in the Recipe Book
The Merbein Development Association had been searching for a 'signature' event to hold in Merbein for some time. The opportunity to hold such a prestigious event in Merbein was realised when the Merbein Development Association's (MDA) application to hold the event was successful in late 2011. A community committee, under the auspices of the MDA, was then formed to organise the Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph at Merbein, which was held - 'Top of the State' on 18th August, 2012. After the success of 2012, the committee became incorporated in 2013. The event has grown in stature with recognition of the event through national media coverage.
